Static on the Line

Chapter 2

The Address Does Not Exist

The trace came back and Renata stared at it for a long time. The address her brother had given was a house on Halloway Court. Halloway Court had been demolished in 2019. There was a parking structure there now. She knew because she drove past it every day on her way to this building. Her supervisor, Boyd, leaned over her shoulder and asked if she was okay, because apparently she had gone the color of paper. She told him the call dropped. She did not tell him about the name. You did not tell people about the name unless you wanted a mandatory evaluation and six weeks of unpaid leave. Instead she copied the audio file to a flash drive when nobody was looking, and on her break she sat in her car in the dark and listened to her dead brother breathe.
