Chapter 1

The Man Who Closed The Orangery

Frankie Doyle had planned forty-one weddings, and she had cried at exactly none of them, because crying was for the guests and competence was for her, and she had never once confused the two. She was, however, prepared to make an exception, and weep openly, and possibly throw something, on the morning she learned that the Allardyce Orangery had been closed. "Closed how," she said into the phone, standing in the middle of her tiny office with a coffee going cold in her hand. "Closed for refurbishment? Closed for the season? Give me a useful adjective." "Closed closed," said Priya, her assistant, who had drawn the short straw of breaking it. "Legally closed. Some lawyer found a fire-safety filing that hadn't been renewed since the nineties — a technicality, the council didn't even know — and he hammered it in court on behalf of a client who wanted the orangery's wedding licence revoked so their own venue down the road would get the bookings. It worked. The orangery can't host an event until it's brought up to a code that'll cost more than the building. So. Closed closed." Frankie set the cold coffee down very precisely, which was what she did instead of throwing it. The Allardyce Orangery was — had been — the most beautiful event venue in the county, a long Victorian glasshouse full of light and old vines, and it was the venue Frankie booked for the couples she liked best, the ones who deserved the good light. She had three weddings pencilled into it across the summer. Three couples who were about to get a phone call. "The lawyer," she said. "The one who did this. Does the lawyer have a name." "Frankie." "I'm not going to do anything. I'm going to know the name. There's a difference." Priya sighed the sigh of a woman who had worked for Frankie for two years and knew exactly how little difference there was. "Julian Marsh," she said. "Marsh and Caldwell. Commercial litigation. He's apparently very good and very expensive and he does this sort of thing for a living — finds the loose thread in a regulation and pulls it until something falls over." Frankie wrote the name down. She did not need to write it down. She wrote it down the way you'd write down the name of a storm. She met him two weeks later, which she had not engineered, whatever Priya later claimed. It was a charity thing — a fundraiser for the children's hospital, the kind of event Frankie attended because half the county's wedding business stood around in those rooms holding small glasses. She was by the silent-auction table, considering whether to bid on a hamper out of spite, when a man beside her picked up the bidding pen and said, conversationally, to no one: "Whoever's running this should be ashamed of the lot numbering. It's not sequential. It's chaos with a clipboard." "It's sequential by donor, not by lot," said Frankie, without looking round. "Which a person would know if they'd read the card at the front of the table instead of arriving at the conclusion first and looking for evidence after." There was a small pause. "That," the man said, "is a remarkably specific accusation to level at a stranger over a hamper." Frankie looked round. He was tall, and dark-suited, and had the particular grooming of a man who billed by the hour and dressed accordingly, and he was looking at her with the bright, narrowed, genuinely-interested expression of someone who had just been insulted with precision and respected the craft. He had a good face. She resented the good face immediately. Good faces, in Frankie's professional experience, got away with things. "Julian Marsh," he said, and offered his hand. Frankie did not take it. "I know who you are," she said. "You closed the Allardyce Orangery. You found a thirty-year-old fire-safety filing and you pulled it in court so your client's venue would scoop up the bookings, and you cost three couples I am personally responsible for the venue of their lives, and you did it, I assume, without ever once standing inside that glasshouse in the afternoon light, because if you had you could not possibly have done it." Julian Marsh lowered his unshaken hand. He did not look ashamed. He looked, infuriatingly, as though the afternoon had just become interesting. "The filing was thirty years lapsed," he said. "That's not a technicality, Miss —" "Doyle." "Miss Doyle. That's a fire-safety certification on a glass building full of people in formalwear, and it had not been valid since before either of us could legally drink. I didn't cost anyone the venue of their lives. The venue cost them, by not filing a form for three decades, and I simply read the law out loud in a room where it counted." He tilted his head. "I'm sorry about your three couples. Genuinely. But don't dress a negligent building up as a victim because the light's nice." It was, Frankie would admit in later years, a frustratingly good answer. At the time she said, "I hope your hamper is full of moths," and walked away, and Julian Marsh watched her go with an expression that she did not see, and would not have known how to read if she had, and which he himself would have struggled, just then, to explain.
